aka that one HS AU where Sam and Gabriel meet at Sam’s summer job at the ice cream parlor and spend the summer together
"Come on, Sammy. I got something to show you," Gabriel says tugging on Sam, his fingers laced in the other boy’s.
"Gabriel I don’t want to spend my one day off from the shop trekking through the freakin’ forest," he complains.
“It’s gonna take like two seconds,” the older boy says rolling his eyes. He pulls harder and Sam follows reluctantly, trying—and failing—to hide his grin. They fight through the brush and a few low hanging branches in Sam’s case, Gabriel leading Sam on with precision and confidence. They emerge next to a stream where a weather beaten bridge spans the water.
When the smaller boy leads Sam over to the wooden structure, Sam stops suddenly. “Is this thing even safe for human passage?”
Gabriel huffs. “It’s fine, you big baby. Come on, it’s right over here.” Sam lets himself be pulled onto the bridge, wincing when it creaks below him. Gabriel yanks him to the rail and, if Sam didn’t know him better, tries to cover a shy grin.
He looks down at where the older boy stopped them and sees a messily carved “S+G” into the rail. It’s not super deep, but the scars in the wood will definitely last a long time. When he glances back up at Gabriel is looking at him expectantly. “You defaced public property?” he finally asks.
Gabriel’s face flushes and he traces his fingers over the marks. “I just—I don’t know. This summer has been almost perfect and I—I want something to remember it by…something that’s just ours and that we can come back to and remember how good it was.”
Sam covers the smaller boy’s hand with is own and leans in until Gabriel tilts his head back to look up. Sam doesn’t say anything, just closes the distance and presses his lips to Gabriel’s trying to convince the other boy—and maybe himself—that this isn’t ending just because the summer is.
